The main focus of my work is based on contemporary popular music techniques in different contextual works.  Specific techniques / ideas which interest me in particular are:
  • The affect of technology on music (FX, Live Sequencing, microphone techniques etc).

  • Popular music which uses innovative and original ideas rather than 'standardised' popular concepts.

  • Use of repetition as a means of development.

  • Populism, and its affect on music and how we perceive it.
Popular music is the music I grew up on, it is where I take my main inspiration from and it's production and theory is also the vocation which I teach.  Popular music is not my only interest as I am also heavily influenced by contemporary classical music and experimental art-music through my studies at Hertfordshire University, where I completed a BSc (Honours) in Electronic Music, and at City University, where I completed an MA in Composition and Creative Practice.

The style which is most important to me, within the Western-Art tradition, has been recently defined as the last recognised and is known as Post-Minimalism.  What is most significant to me about this style or techique is the use of repetition as a means of development, in other words the idea of repetition with difference.  The writings of Austrian composer, Bernhard Lang, has been a basis in my conceptual ideals, especially his Loop Aesthetic Essay although my compositional ideas are slightly less experimental.  Other areas of influence includes alternative popular music of the likes of Radiohead, Foals, Queens of the Stone Age, Bjork, Bloc Party, Agnus Obel, Aphex Twin and many more.

NAVIGATING THE SITE...

To find works composed or arranged myself please look under the subheading 'WORKS'.  These are compositions which follow a more western-art tradition as with examples of scored compositions and audio installation ideas.

Being a strong advocat for popular music you can also find works which I and other bands have written and produced under the subheading 'PRODUCTION'.  These mainly fall under the bracket of rock, acoustic or indie music.

Under the subheading 'EDUCATION / BLOG' you will find details and ideas of any educational work I have been involved with outside of my full-time job (Curriclum Manager of Music at Palmer's College, Grays).  You can also find a feed from my work twitter and compositional twitter.

'AND INFINITY', the last sub-heading, is a new performance and production concept of mine which involves performing original songs / works via looping and layering.  What is also key about this new concept is the openness of the music; every performance will be different and I hope to collaborate with various other artists when performing live.
