Music Workshop

Jack and Jills After School Club, 30th May 2013

I recently did a Music workshop for children aged between 6 and 10 years age.  We started with a warm up where the children moved to the music Fur Elise by Beethoven, exploring tempo and dynamics via movement.  The children then had an opportunity to play the piano, guitar and Djembe Drum and then we did a vocal warm-up and sung Firework by Katy Perry.

Everyone had a go at singing the 'catchy' part of the chorus while I sang the rest of the song allowing the children to join in if they wished.

My daughter, Neve, could not help but sit on my lap as she was in the room next door...

Educational Workshop / Party ideas

If you are interested in me facilitating a workshop or perhaps leading a childrens' party for your child I can offer a few options which I can guarantee are fun and enriching for a variety of ages.  Please contact me via the link below with the date, location and time span and we can come to a price dependent on the size of the group and the type defined as follows.

I can cater the following workshops from Key stages 1 through to 3 (ages 5 to 13):

  • Singing Workshop

Choose a song which we will then rehearse and perform with live backing performed by myself (Guitar / Piano)

  • Songwriting Workshop

We will write the lyrics and then compose a melody and chord sequence in the session which I will lead but the ideas will be decided by the group as a whole.

  • Instrument Demonstration Workshop

I will bring an array of instruments for children to have a go at and we will end the party performing a song of the birthday boy / girls' choice.

  • Recording Workshop

I will bring various recording equipment to record a song on location of the birthday child's choice.  Certain students would need to take a more dominant role in the recording but overall everyone will be on the final mp3 which would handed be downloadable by all via a website for everyone to keep.

  • Dance Track Workshop

I will bring an array of software and drum machines which will enable childeren / young adults to create their own dance track.  The party will add a vocal hook which will be processed and looped and the track will be downloadable by all via a website for everyone to keep.

The following workshops are more suited for high level Key Stage 3 through to GCSE and A-Level students (ages 13 to 18+):

  • Minimalism Workshop

An instrumental workshop for able musicians.  We would discuss the concept of minimalism and try and perform extracts from recent minimalist works including Riley's 'In C' and various pieces by Steve Reich.  We would then compose a piece within the session and perform it.

  • Electro-acoustic workshop

If you go to university to study composition the chances are you will study electro-acoustic music which is a form of sound art. This workshop is an introduction to this type of music and would go into some theories behind why this music is so important.  I would need additional equipment including an 8 bus mixer and 8 speakers and so this may come to an additional cost.
